People interested in getting into the field of nursing, who do not have the ability to attend a traditional school campus, will find some programs available to take online. The online colleges for nursing will offer different programs designed to provide the student with the knowledge required to obtain a certificate or degree upon completion. There are many advantages to taking the nursing courses online, as well as several disadvantages. The main advantage is the ability to work at a pace that fits each student’s personal schedule, although the assignments will need to be completed within a specified amount of time.

The University of Phoenix offers many online programs in the field of nursing, with most of their associate and bachelor degree programs revolving around the area of health care management. These programs are available to students who have no prior degrees or skills in the field of nursing. Upon completion, students will be able to work in management or leadership positions within the heath care industry. Kaplan University also offers a number of nursing programs which include training to become a nursing assistant, a medical transcriptionist or bridging the gap from an RN to a MSN.

 
Walden University also offers a number of bridging programs to help people who already possess degrees in nursing, further their education to advance their careers. There are also many schools offering can training over the Internet. Some of these schools are accredited universities and some are not. The credits accepted at most colleges, licensing boards and places of employment, will be those acquired through accredited schools. The biggest drawback to taking nursing courses online, is the inability to receive clinical training. Programs which require a lab or clinical setting to complete the course will accept credits obtained from accredited schools. This means students enrolled in an online course will need to take the additional lab or clinic requirements through their area campus. Students who have a full schedule can often find courses available at area colleges which are offered at night. The business management related programs and those designed to bridge, will not usually require clinical experience to obtain the credits for the degree. Bridge programs will require the applicant to possess an existing degree in nursing in order to be accepted into the program.
