There are also positions within the nursing field, which do not offer degrees, which include the nursing assistant jobs as well as the jobs for practical nurses. A practical or registered nurse completes a program and takes an exam to obtain a license, which allows them to be employed within their chosen field. The types of nursing degrees available in the field of nursing can apply to people who have already obtained their license in either practical or registered nursing or to people entering the field for the first time.

People who have no previous education in nursing can enroll in an associate degree program, which generally takes about two years to complete. A bachelor degree program takes four years to complete. The first part of the program is designed to cover the basic educational requirements before entering the areas of study which pertain to medicine and health care. These courses will include clinical studies as well as applications in theory. The bachelor of science program is more often offered as a short program to students who already possess a license in practical or registered nursing.

Types of Nursing Degrees

The programs available for qualified nurses require applicants to possess valid LPN or RN licenses. This program is designed to speed the process of obtaining the degree by offering the course as a short term program for students who have already completed the first phase of their education by becoming practical or registered nurses. The types of nursing degrees available for this method include the bachelor of science and the master of science degrees. The bachelor degree programs can focus on specific areas of study, which include occupational health, primary care, surgical and cardiology.

In order to study within an advanced or specialized area of medicine, the applicant will need to acquire one of the higher level degrees. An LPN or RN can obtain a bachelor degree and apply to a school of specialized medicine. This is also true for people who obtain their masters in the health care field. The types of nursing degrees available as master degree programs allow nurses to choose an area, which can provide them with a masters in gerontology or as a family nurse practitioner. A master degree can also be obtained for nurse administrator or educator.
